It was a bitterly cold winter morning when I arrived at the Mponeng Gold Mine in South Africa — the deepest mine in the world. The pre-dawn air bit through my jacket, and my breath fogged in the floodlights above the shaft headgear. It seemed impossible that only a few hours later, I'd be working in heat exceeding 60 degrees Celsius, four kilometers beneath the surface of the Earth.
I was there to film a corporate documentary for a mining company — following a female geologist through her working day, from the surface briefing all the way down to the rockface. The goal was to capture the scale and danger of deep-level mining, and the dedication of those who work in this extreme environment. What followed was a day that tested every skill I had as a cameraman — and every ounce of my endurance.
The Cold Start and Safety Induction
The day began before sunrise, my hands numb from the cold as I carried my gear across the frost-hard ground to the mine offices. The biting surface chill contrasted sharply with the knowledge that far below, the rock would be hot enough to make steel uncomfortable to touch.
Inside the safety briefing room, heaters hummed and miners gathered for the mandatory induction session. Every visitor and worker, regardless of experience, must attend this before going underground. The instructor explained emergency protocols — from what to do in the event of a rockfall or underground fire, to how to reach a refuge chamber. Even after years in film and fieldwork, I found myself humbled by the seriousness of it all. Down there, there's no room for error.
I took the opportunity to film the geologist during this stage, standing at the back of the briefing room, capturing her attentive expressions and the silhouettes of miners lit by the fluorescent tubes overhead. Because I couldn't direct anyone, I relied purely on natural light and found moments — handheld, weaving quietly between chairs to catch a glance or a gesture that told the story.
Kitting Up and Passing Through Security
After the induction, I passed through a metal detector and entered the change house — a cavernous room lined with lockers and hooks. Here, miners exchanged street clothes for their protective overalls, helmets, and headlamps. I was issued my own safety kit: safety glasses, ear protection, and thick gloves. The gloves, though essential, were my nemesis. They made it nearly impossible to adjust focus or switch lenses, and I found myself constantly pulling them off mid-shot. Before long, sharp rock fragments had sliced into my fingers, leaving thin trails of blood that mixed with grime and sweat.
I filmed the geologist donning her helmet and adjusting her lamp, the fluorescent light flickering across her face. My assistant, Anthony Ndabazitha, moved behind me, carrying spare cameras, a small tripod and batteries in his backpack — our lifeline once we went below. Even here, in the relative comfort of the surface change room, I could feel the tension of what lay ahead.
Into the Cage: The Descent Begins
With our gear strapped tight, we stepped into the cage — a steel elevator with three levels, designed to drop dozens of miners deep into the Earth. The gate clanged shut, and with a shudder, we began to descend. The air pressure shifted instantly. The light from above faded, replaced by total darkness. We dropped nearly two kilometers in seconds, the speed leaving my stomach somewhere near the surface. Then the cage stopped. We filed out, only to board another that took us two kilometers deeper, almost to the very bottom of the Mponeng shaft — over four kilometers underground.
I filmed what I could during the descent, bracing the camera against my chest in the vibrating cage. The lighting was dim and erratic — mostly from headlamps — so I cranked the ISO and opened the aperture wide. Every shot had to feel real, the claustrophobia and anticipation tangible.
The Underground Train and the Refuge Chamber
At the bottom of the shaft, we boarded a narrow-gauge mine train, a rickety series of open wagons that rattled through tunnels lit by flickering bulbs. The heat was unbearable, and condensation ran down the walls. As we jolted through the darkness, I filmed the geologist gripping the rail, her headlamp beam cutting through the gloom.
After several kilometers, we disembarked in a large chamber. This was the refuge — a vital safety feature of every deep mine. Its thick, fireproof door sealed off an area with independent ventilation, communication lines to the surface, and emergency rations — even piped cold water for hydration.
The refuge became my base of operations. I stored spare cameras and sensitive batteries there, safe from the extreme heat nearer the rockface. Whenever a camera overheated or the lens fogged up, I'd crawl back through narrow tunnels to exchange it.
Waiting While the Safety Team Inspects
Before we could proceed, the safety inspectors went ahead to check the next section of tunnel for toxic gases and unexploded charges from previous blasting. While we waited, the miners rested on their haunches, chatting quietly. I took advantage of this lull to film atmospheric shots — sweat glistening on helmets, condensation dripping from pipes, the rhythmic thump of distant drilling reverberating through the rock.
I filmed the geologist chatting to the mine captain in charge, under the dim glow of her headlamp. Again, no staged lighting — only what the mine provided. That was part of the challenge and the beauty of this shoot: capturing authenticity without interference. Every beam of light, every reflection off wet stone became part of the story.
The Rockface: Filming in the Furnace
When the inspectors returned and declared the stope safe, we crawled forward toward the working face — the zone where miners drilled into the gold-bearing reef. The tunnel grew narrower and hotter. The humidity was suffocating. My camera lens fogged instantly when I lifted it to my eye.
That's when I used a trick I'd learned from my old film school lecturer, Fanie van der Merwe. I carried a portable incandescent light, and whenever fog formed inside the lens, I'd close the aperture completely and shine the hot light directly onto the glass. The warmth would evaporate the moisture just long enough to get a few precious minutes of clear footage before condensation crept back in.
I shot mostly handheld at this point. The uneven, slippery rock floor made tripods unreliable, though Anthony and I carried a lightweight one just in case. I followed the geologist as she crouched by the rock wall, examining the gold-bearing ore, marking veins with chalk. The lighting came from her headlamp, the miners' beams, and the faint glow of machinery nearby. I had to be careful of not getting too close to the huge pneumatic drills, because they sprayed a mix of dust and water everywhere.
Working in the Heat
At the rockface, the temperature reached around 60°C (140°F), and the air shimmered like a mirage. My camera gear grew almost too hot to touch. Sweat poured down my face and arms, dripping onto the monitor screen. Even breathing felt laborious.
Anthony and I took turns crawling back to the refuge to fetch fresh equipment or to cool off. Each trip meant crawling on our bellies through the stope's jagged passage, hands scraping against razor-sharp rock fragments that easily drew blood.
Despite the heat and exhaustion, the miners worked methodically — drilling and putting explosive charges into the holes. I filmed the geologist moving among them, her small frame dwarfed by the machinery and the vast, sloping rock around her.
The Interview in the Tunnel
When the opportunity came to record her interview, I chose a quieter tunnel — the one where the little train had dropped us off earlier in the day. The air there was still hot but mercifully calmer, with less machinery noise. The long, receding tunnel behind her offered beautiful compositional depth, a visual metaphor for the journey she takes each day into the Earth.
I used my portable incandescent light once again, but this time as a rim light, giving her outline a warm, golden edge against the dark tunnel. For fill light, I mounted a small on-board LED panel on the camera itself. The effect was subtle but effective — the mix of warm and cool tones reflecting the balance of human warmth and the mine's harshness.
Retreat and Ascent
After hours of filming, we finally received the signal to return. The miners packed up their tools, and we retraced our path through the tunnels. My body felt drained — every movement a slow effort against the heat and the weight of sweat-soaked overalls.
In the refuge, I swapped my last fogged camera for a cooler one to film the return journey. The cage ride upward was disorienting. After hours in the furnace below, the air grew cooler as we rose, and I shivered as sweat cooled against my skin. Ten hours later, when the gate finally opened and I stepped back into daylight, a blast of icy wind hit me. The winter cold that had seemed harsh that morning now felt like pure relief.
Reflections
Working as a corporate cameraman often means adapting to different worlds — boardrooms one day, underground infernos the next. Filming in Mponeng pushed both my endurance and my equipment to the edge. I'd gone through four cameras, battled fogging lenses, searing heat, and treacherous terrain. My hands were cut and my clothes soaked, but the footage I brought back told a story few ever get to witness — the perseverance of people who spend their lives working beneath the Earth's surface, and the delicate balance of science, danger, and courage that defines deep-level mining.
